New York Islanders: Finally Finding Ways to Win
The New York Islanders were coming off a west coast trip and looking to find a way to win games. They might have found something out west.
Heading into the Calgary game I figured the New York Islanders needed to win 8 of the next 10 games in order to get back into the thick of things.
Watching the Islanders early on this season the Penguin and Capital back-to-back looked to be two long games. The Islanders were able to extinguish the Flames after another Thomas Hickey overtime goal.
Against the Penguins they were able to get on the board late in the first courtesy of Johnny Boychuk. They were able to build on the lead in the second and went into the third up 3-0.
Sure enough the Penguins were able to tie the game scoring three unanswered goals in the third. The narrative early on this season was getting old; Islanders give up a late goal and lose the game.
Changing the course of the season.
Hickey took a shot from the slot and Anders Lee was able to get a deflection goal with 26 seconds left in the third. That change in course of the puck might very well do the same for the Islanders’ season. It was refreshing to see the Isles have an answer against the opposing team.
Next up was a well-rested Capitals team. The Islanders were able to answer the bell and I’d say its safe to call the Capitals game the Islanders most complete game to date. They used three third period goals, and great goaltending by Jaroslav Halak to shutout the Capitals 3-0.
What does it mean going forward?
They Isles currently sit at 9-10-4 and if they win 5 of the next 7 they would sit at 14-12-4. Getting over .500 would be a step in the right direction, but I want to see the Islanders get to above the actual .500 mark before I really get excited. They have managed to find ways to win of late, and so just maybe they are finally turning a corner.
