New team, same message as Wild's Strachan reaches out to aid animals
Although aggressive on the ice, Minnesota Wild defenseman Tyson Strachan certainly has a softer side away from the rink.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Strachan joined fiancee Kate Ankoviak in developing Strachan's Strays, a non-profit group which stresses raising awareness and educating individuals on pet homelessness as its primary goals.
"Fans have embraced it everywhere we’ve gone," Strachan told Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "That's the great thing about this game and fans and the positive side of social media. Everywhere we go, we just partner up with different shelters in the area and try to raise awareness and money and reach out to fans and get them involved and try to make an impact in that local area."
Strachan has been well-traveled in his NHL career, having played for four other NHL teams - including the St. Louis Blues with noted animal advocate David Backes. The 30-year-old Strachan, who counts Backes and his wife Kelly has dear friends, has rescue dogs Raja and Soder in his home.
Strachan has scored one goal and set up 19 others with the Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres and Blues in 184 career contests.
