Montreal Canadiens Give Sven Andrighetto Another Chance

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Montreal Canadiens are going to be without two offensive players in Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais. The Habs have recalled Sven Andrighetto in their absence.

The Montreal Canadiens have recalled Sven Andrighetto to the NHL. It will be the Swiss winger’s third stint with the big club already this season. Andrighetto has not been able to impress the Canadiens management at the NHL level, so he better take advantage of this chance.

Andrighetto is an offensive winger. There is no doubt he has skill. However, he continues to struggle when placed in the Habs lineup. Last season, he played 44 games with the Canadiens, and scored seven goals and 17 points.

He is a speedy winger and had flashes where he looked like a top nine NHL player for sure. However, there would be long stretches where he would fail to register a point as well.

This season, Andrighetto was penciled into a lineup spot before training camp began by most fans. After such a lengthy NHL stint last season, it was expected the 23 year old would be able to earn a role once again.

He did. Sort of. He was at least on the NHL roster when it was first announced. However, before he played a single game Andrighetto was placed on waivers and sent to the St. John’s Ice Caps of the AHL.

The frustrating thing about Andrighetto’s lack of NHL offence, is that he lights it up very time he goes to the AHL. Last season, he scored 23 points in 26 AHL games before playing the rest of the year with the Habs.

This season, he started the year with 11 points in ten games in St. John’s. The he was brought up for his second kick at the NHL can. Andrighetto went scoreless in three games and was sent back to the Ice Caps.

Since then, he continues to pile up points. He has two points in each of his last three games and eight points in his last five. With Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais out long term with knee injuries, the Canadiens need all of the offence they can get.

Hopefullly, Andrighetto’s struggles at the NHL don’t continue. The Habs are going to need scoring from wherever they can get it and we all know Andrighetto is an offensive player. Let’s just hope the third time is the charm for Andrighetto and he brings his offensive game with him to the NHL this time.
