Maple Leafs fire GM Dave Nonis, head coach Peter Horachek
By Mike Cole
Sweeping changes were expected for the Toronto Maple Leafs after an abysmal season, and the club is wasting little time.
General manager Dave Nonis and head coach Peter Horachek were fired Sunday, the team announced. Most of the coaching staff was also let go as part of the ongoing efforts to clean house in one of the NHL’s most passionate markets.
One person who won’t be fired is assistant coach Steve Staios, whose job is safe, according to reports. Sportsnet’s Damien Cox reported Saturday night that Staios will return to a player personnel role.
Toronto just finished one of the worst seasons in franchise history. The Leafs finished 30-44-8 and had plenty of drama both on and off the ice during the season. The Leafs fired then-head coach Randy Carlyle on Jan. 6, but that proved to do little to turn things around. Toronto went 9-28-5 under Horachek to end the season.
