Toronto Maple Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur was suspended for the rest of preseason and two regular-season games on Saturday for hitting Detroit's Justin Abdelkader in the head.

This was the ninth suspension by new NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan during the preseason. Those bans total 31 regular-season games and close to $700,000 in lost salary.

MacArthur will de docked $35,135 and is eligible to return to Toronto's lineup Oct. 15 against Calgary.

His hit came late in the third period Friday of Toronto's 4-3 overtime road victory against the Red Wings. No penalty was assessed.
