Las Vegas Hockey Team “Name is Definitely Set” According to Owner Bill Foley

Ideas are no longer being accepted for the new Las Vegas hockey team. The team’s owner, a local billionaire named Bill Foley has landed on a name for the NHL’s 31st franchise. But the name of the team will be kept under wraps until an official announcement.

The name is definitely set,” Foley said Monday from California. “But I can’t tell you exactly what it is. That’s a secret.

After months of deliberation, the Las Vegas hockey team management had quite the process in getting their name. They had to go through legal hoops to secure trademarks, copyrights and domain names.  The team will be called either the Silver Knights, the Desert Knights or the Golden Knights according to a tweet by SB Nation’s Travis Hughes

An interesting part of the naming process is that the team was not named prior to being awarded the NHL’s 31st franchise. The answer to why the name wasn’t established according to Foley is the NHL couldn’t give any ideas on names.

The reality was the league said, ‘You don’t have a team’ so we couldn’t advance any ideas from the NHL,” Foley said. He added that he didn’t want to be presumptuous that he was getting the team to press the issue of the name with Bettman prior to the vote from the Board of Governors on June 22

Knights Was Las Vegas Hockey’s First Choice

From the beginning of his pursuit of an NHL team, Foley was partial to a team name that included Knights in it. Foley originally envisioned calling his team the Black Knights. But he came to the conclusion that he was going to have a legal battle on his hands and there was some pushback from the United States Military Academy as well as from fans who hated the name.

With the naming rights to the team secure, the timing of an official unveiling could happen within the next month. The event will be hosted at the T-Mobile Arena which was designed to accommodate hockey. The exact date of the reveal is not yet known with the team’s jerseys designs already completed according to Foley and will be for sale when the name is officially unveiled.

With the team not playing their first games until the 2017-2018 season there is no rush, but the team needs to start building an identity before the expansion draft next offseason.
