Jagr in contract talks with Penguins

Five-time NHL scoring champion Jaromir Jagr held contract talks with the Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday as he eyed a return to the league after three years in Russia, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reported.

"We are meeting this afternoon to talk about a deal," Jagr's agent Petr Svoboda said. "Hopefully by tomorrow, we will know something."

Jagr met last week with Penguins owner and former teammate Mario Lemieux, and the latest meeting was with general manager Ray Shero, according to the report.

Svoboda said the 39-year-old plans to decide on his next NHL team before unrestricted free agency opens Friday.

"We expect a decision in the next couple of days," Svoboda told the Detroit News. "Teams need to know their plan (going into free agency)."

Jagr, who left the New York Rangers after the 2007-08 season to play with Avangard Omsk of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League, also has a one-year offer from the Red Wings. He earned nearly $6 million with Omsk last season, and his one-year NHL deal is expected to be significantly lower.

Jagr started his career with the Penguins in 1990, helping the team win the Stanley Cup in 1991 and '92 and winning the MVP award in 1999. The seven-time All-Star also played for the Washington Capitals before joining the Rangers in a trade during the 2003-04 season.
