Isles coach Capuano out of hospital

Published Jan. 20, 2013 12:00 a.m. ET

New York Islanders head coach Jack Capuano is out of the hospital following surgery to treat kidney stones, but it is unknown when he will make his season debut behind the bench.

Capuano was released Sunday morning after having surgery Saturday night, when the Islanders opened the season with a 2-1 home loss to the New Jersey Devils.

It wasn't until about 25 minutes before the game that the Islanders said Capuano wouldn't coach because of ''medical reasons.''

New York hosts Tampa Bay on Monday, and an Islanders spokesman says Sunday it is still to be determined whether Capuano will coach then.

Assistant coach Doug Weight ran the Islanders bench on Saturday. Capuano had been at Nassau Coliseum for much of the day and spoke to reporters in the morning.
