Islanders' Greiss to start season opener versus Blackhawks

The New York Islanders will begin life at the Barclays Center with goaltender Thomas Greiss in net for Friday's game versus the reigning Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks.

With Jaroslav Halak nursing an undisclosed injury, the team confirmed Greiss will start Friday's tilt. Greiss was signed to a two-year, $3 million contract on July 1 after posting a 9-6-3 mark with a 2.59 goals-against average last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Jean-Francois Berube, who will serve as Greiss' backup, was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday.

Halak is expected to miss the team's first three games, Arthur Staple of Newsday reported. The 30-year-old Halak had a franchise-best 38 wins last season, 11 more than his personal high set with the St. Louis Blues in 2010-11.
