Jeff Skinner scored 1:17 into the third period, Cam Ward made 32 saves and Carolina beat Atlanta 1-0 in a preseason game Saturday night marred by an injury to the Hurricanes' Sergei Samsonov.
Samsonov was taken off the ice on a stretcher after he was tripped by Thrashers defenseman Dustin Byfuglien on a rush and crashed into the end boards with 18:05 left in the game. The team said Samsonov was taken to a hospital for observation and that he had full feeling in all his extremities.
Skinner knocked a lose puck past Atlanta goalie Chris Mason after a shot by Erik Cole. Mason, signed by the Thrashers as a free agent in the offseason, made 28 saves.
Carolina improved to 2-2, and Atlanta dropped to 0-2.
