Hartnell experiences elevated heart rate

Philadelphia Flyers forward Scott Hartnell will sit out Monday night's preseason game against the New York Rangers after experiencing an elevated heart rate during Friday's game, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

Hartnell, 29, is scheduled to see a cardiologist Tuesday, general manager Paul Holmgren said. Holmgren said Hartnell's heart rate has since come down, but that Hartnell would not play Monday as a precaution.

Holmgren said Hartnell's heart rate "would not settle" between the second and third periods of Friday night's 3-1 win at Detroit, calling the situation "scary."

"We'll continue to monitor it and run some tests on him and get to the bottom of it," Holmgren said, noting that Hartnell was examined by the trainer after he had "twitching" in his arms.

Hartnell tallied 24 goals and 25 assists last season on the Flyers' top performing line with Danny Briere and Ville Leino.
