Adam Hall scored two goals, Scott Jackson and Dana Tyrell had two assists each, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Dallas Stars 4-2 on Tuesday night in the preseason opener for both teams.

Aaron Gagnon ended Dan Ellis' shutout bid 1:19 into the third period to make it 2-1, but Hall and Mattias Ohlund added goals for Tampa Bay.

Ellis made 17 saves, and Dominic Moore also scored for the Lightning.

Philip Larsen added a third-period goal for the Stars.

Ellis was signed as a free agent in July to compete with Mike Smith to be Tampa Bay's No. 1 goaltender. Smith is out for at least a week because of a broken right ring finger.

Dallas' Andrew Raycroft stopped 16 shots in the first period and a half before Brent Krahn took over. Krahn, competing with Raycroft for the backup job behind Kari Lehtonen, made 11 saves the rest of the way.

Lightning defenseman Matt Smaby left in the first period with an upper body injury and didn't return.
