Grievance filed over Mike Richards' contract termination

Published Aug. 10, 2015 2:12 p.m. ET

TORONTO (AP) The NHL players' union has filed a grievance on behalf of Mike Richards against the Los Angeles Kings, contesting his contract termination.

The Kings terminated Richards' contract in late June for what they called ''a material breach of the requirements'' of his contract. Richards had $22 million and five years left on the deal.

It was not immediately clear when Richards would have a hearing, though the NHL Players Association would like the process expedited.

Richards is a free agent.
