Goaltending still a question mark in Buffalo

Published May. 8, 2015 12:37 p.m. ET

The Sabres have had a revolving door in net since trading Ryan Miller during the 2013-14 season, but now that the team is rebuilding, the team could stabilize the goaltending situation soon.

As it stands right now, Buffalo has Chad Johnson and Anders Lindback on its roster, but Lindback's contract is up and Johnson doesn't have the stats of a No. 1 goalie.

The Hockey Writers speculated over possible goaltending targets for the Sabres, and some interesting names popped up. One of those was Jimmy Howard, Detroit's starting netminder, who lost his job at times this season to young goalie Petr Mrazek.

"[Howard]'s already said he won’t force his way out of Detroit, but what if a team that wants him comes calling?" The Hockey Writers wrote. "He has four years left on his contract with a cap hit of $5.3 million per year, and the deal also includes a no-trade clause. If [Buffalo GM Tim] Murray were to want Howard, he’d have to convince the 31-year old to go to the Sabres and be a part of an up-and-coming rebuild."

The Hockey Writers also suggested Sharks netminder Antti Niemi and current Rangers back-up Cam Talbot as possible options in net.
