Galchenyuk throws wrench into Canadiens re-signing plans

Published Jun. 22, 2015 12:58 p.m. ET

The Montreal Canadiens are reportedly working toward re-signing restricted free agent Alex Galchenyuk, but the forward might have slowed that process down when he reportedly fired agent Ian Pulver, according to TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie. Unless Galchenyuk plans to represent himself, it seems the the 21-year-old will have to put a halt to negotiations until he finds a new agent.

Galchenyuk, the third overall selection in the 2012 Draft, is coming off the best season of his career with the Canadiens, as he posted 46 points (20 goals, 26 assists) in 80 games for the Habs. He had the fourth-most points on the team in the playoffs with four points (one goal, three assists) in the playoffs. His lone postseason goal was a game-winner in overtime in Game 2 of the first round series against the Ottawa Senators.

According to Lavoie, the Canadiens are attempting to get a deal done with Galchenyuk before July 1, when other teams are able to draw up an offer sheet for Galchenyuk. Lavoie said the contract should not be complicated for Galchenyuk, however, as Lavoie said it will likely be a bridge deal until Galchenyuk matures more at the NHL level.
