Funniest evidence yet Edmonton's defense is laugh-out-loud terrible

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 12:16 p.m. ET

The Edmonton Oilers have not been to the postseason since the 2005-06 season. In the eight years since that last playoff run — granted, it took the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final, where they lost to Carolina — the franchise has drafted in the top 10 seven times, including holding the No. 1 overall pick three straight years. Six of those picks were spent on offense, one on defense.

The franchise once-synonymous with domination that sported teams like Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, Kurri and Fuhr is now trying to build a dynasty (OK, they’ll start with average team) around Eberle, Hall and Nugent-Hopkins.

Not a bad core of forwards, but the Oilers employed 13 goalies in those eight seasons, including six last season alone. They have finished in the bottom 10 in the league in goals allowed six times, and twice allowed the most goals in the league.

Clearly, defense is not this team’s strong suit. But rather than go into drawn-out debates about why they can’t keep the puck out of the net, or in-depth analytics about shots allowed and special teams, if one wants to know why the Oilers suck at defense (and if one wants a good laugh, to boot), just look at this beauty from Thursday night's 2-1 exhibition loss to Vancouver:
