Four Red Wings players eligible to continue seasons
For some borderline NHL players, the beauty of a two-way contract means the player's season does not necessarily have to end when the NHL club loses in the playoffs. The Red Wings have four players on their roster with two-way contracts: goaltender Petr Mrazek, forwards Landon Ferraro and Tomas Jurco, and defenseman Alexey Marchenko.
Detroit's AHL club, the Grand Rapids Griffins, will play in Game 4 of a best-of-five series on Saturday, and Detroit must decide quickly whether to let the players go for the summer or send them to Grand Rapids to help with the minor league playoff cause.
"Of the four, Mrazek would have the biggest impact given his success in Grand Rapids and Detroit this season," Peter Wallner of M Live wrote. "Since recalled to Detroit the last time in early March, Mrazek had two shutouts in the seven games against the Lightning with a .925 save percentage. He played 29 games in Detroit, succeeding Jimmy Howard late in the season as the starter."
According to Bob Duff, a sports columnist for the Windsor Star, Detroit already made one decision Thursday morning.
