Forsberg will not play against Columbus

Peter Forsberg acknowledged feeling better about his progress Friday but not enough to consider getting back into uniform for the Colorado Avalanche this week.

The 37-year-old Forsberg, who is considering a comeback with the Avalanche, ruled out any chance of his being back when Colorado hosts the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday.

''I want to be out there and be on the ice to help the team,'' Forsberg said. ''If I didn't feel that way there's something wrong.''

Forsberg worked out with the team again, taking part in drills and even exchanging hard checks with David Jones, who has been sidelined by a shoulder injury.

The drill was meant to test Jones' shoulder.

''He was rough on me,'' Jones said. ''Once he puts that helmet on, he looks pretty good out there.''

Forsberg last played for the Avalanche during the 2007-08 season. But he was limited by a groin injury.

A year ago, Forsberg played for Modo, but a foot ailment limited his time on the ice. He had 11 goals and 19 assists in 23 games.

Forsberg said he would skate again Saturday morning. Beyond that, coach Joe Sacco said there was no timetable for Forsberg's return.

''I've seen gradual improvement every time he stepped on the ice,'' Sacco said. ''He will make the decision, the right decision at the appropriate time.''
