Flyers' Hakstol dismisses North Dakota's new nickname

Published Nov. 18, 2015 2:52 p.m. ET

Let's just say that Philadelphia Flyers coach Dave Hakstol isn't a fan of North Dakota's new nickname.

While the collegiate powerhouse officially settled on "Fighting Hawks" on Wednesday, Hakstol - who is a former North Dakota coach - was succinct in his disapproval.

"It should have stayed 'North Dakota,'" Hakstol told the Courier Post.

Hakstol played hockey at North Dakota (1989-92) when its nickname was the Fighting Sioux. The 47-year-old spent the previous 11 seasons with North Dakota, guiding the school to seven Frozen Four appearances.

The Fighting Hawks' nickname replaces the Fighting Sioux, which was officially dropped in 2012 after the school spent years of battling with the NCAA in regard to using Native American imagery in its logo.

The Fighting Hawks received 57.24 percent of the final vote to edge the Roughriders for the school's nickname.
