Edmonton Oilers: Talbot NHL's First Star of Week, Oilers Top Standings

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Edmonton Oilers and goaltender Cam Talbot have had a pretty solid week.

After he and his wife welcomed twins Wednesday, Talbot is now the NHL’s First Star of the Week. Through this past week, Talbot has only allowed three goals on 99 shots and earned a shutout in the Oilers’ 3-0 Heritage Classic win over Winnipeg.

With Talbot on a hot streak, the Oilers can finally trust someone between the pipes. Not to mention, they have a better shot at winning hockey games and don’t need to worry as much about shots getting through.

Despite Talbot’s shaky start to the season, he seems to be back on track and proving himself with Edmonton. With him and Gustavsson, the Oilers have an experienced tandem that’s ready for anything.

Not only did Talbot earn first star honors, he also helped the Oilers to a 5-1 record to start the season. The last time the Oilers were 5-1 to start the year was in 1985-86.

With an impressive start to the 2016-17 campaign, this Oilers team looks different, and a lot better. They are playing a smarter game, and are looking to be tougher and outplay their opponents. If Edmonton can keep it up, this season will be a better one, and perhaps one of the best in years.

The most impressive performance came in the Oilers 3-1 win over St. Louis. Talbot was excellent between the pipes, and the Oilers outplayed them and looked tougher. Not to mention, the Blues are one of the best teams in the league and played a stronger all-around game.

This Oilers team is ready for change, and they aren’t afraid to show it. Get ready for new times ahead, and even if the team doesn’t completely turn around this season, they’re getting ready.
