Edmonton Oilers Hold Productive Practice on Off-Day
The Edmonton Oilers don’t usually practice on Mondays. However, the Oilers deemed a day off unacceptable following Sunday’s horrendous performance.
Edmonton held practice Monday, and it proved to be productive in the end. They took the time to re-learn and continued to improve in poor areas. Not to mention, they also worked on fixing their mistakes.
“Practice was very productive today,” head coach Todd McLellan told the media. “If we come to the rink tomorrow prepared and sharp as individuals, we’ll be fine.”

He also made a strong point regarding the Oilers’ play. The team has been trying to fix their mistakes by putting up more offense, that way they will win hockey games. And Todd McLellan won’t have it.
“We’ve tried to outscore our mistakes, and that’s not happening,” McLellan said. “We haven’t been very good defensively. I expect more.”
There were plenty of other headlines and takeaways from Monday’s skate. First off, Edmonton recalled Laurent Brossoit for Tuesday’s game against Carolina. After Jonas Gustavsson’s collision Sunday, he was deemed injured. The Oilers also assigned defenseman Matthew Benning to the Bakersfield Condors.
Cam Talbot did not look ready in Sunday’s game and even surrendered a goal from center ice. He has not been solid to start the season, and considering he is expecting twins Wednesday, he likely won’t start against Carolina.
Benoit Pouliot looks ready to redeem himself after a rough showing against Buffalo. The winger took two penalties and had two giveaways in the loss. The Oilers also benched Pouliot for the last two periods against the Sabres due to his poor play.

“It’s my problem, my fault,” Pouliot said. “I knew [getting benched] was coming. I’ll learn from it and improve.”
It looks like Pouliot will dress for Tuesday’s game. However, there is the possibility the Oilers scratch him or demote him. Also, they could make him watch from the press box.
Hopefully, the Oilers truly learned from their mistakes, and will be prepared to rebound against the Hurricanes.
