Devils GM eyes signing first-round pick Zacha

Published Aug. 4, 2015 11:37 a.m. ET

New Jersey Devils general manager Ray Shero hears the clock ticking on the wall in relation to signing first-round selection Pavel Zacha.

"I'm going to work on it this week. I believe, hopefully, we'll get it done," Shero told NJ Advance Media on Monday. "This is all bonus-related with these top players."

The sixth-overall pick of the 2015 draft, Zacha must sign an entry-level contract by 5 p.m. ET on Aug. 15 in order to play in the NHL this season. As stipulated in the collective bargaining agreement, Zacha's contract will be for three seasons for the likely maximum entry-level NHL salary of $925,000 and American Hockey League salary of $70,000 per season.

The 18-year-old forward Zacha elected to skip the Czech Republic's World Junior Championship evaluation camp on Saturday in Calgary, Alberta. The move was made to avoid the risk of injury for the 6-foot-3, 210-pound center.

Zacha collected 16 goals and 18 assists in 37 games with the Sarnia Sting of the Ontario Hockey League last season.
