Dallas Stars News: Roster Cut Again, Justin Fontaine Signs

The Dallas Stars both added and subtracted to their roster today. Get an update on all of the transactions today.

It’s been a hectic past few days for the Dallas Stars. Preseason games, injury updates, and roster additions and subtractions have reigned supreme across the news feed, but are slowly becoming less consistent.

The Stars are one week away from their season opener against the Anaheim Ducks. Between now and then, Dallas has to play one more preseason game against the Los Angeles Kings (tomorrow night in Las Vegas) and trim their roster down to 23 players.

They will also need to make decisions on injured players and their statuses. For example, both Tyler Seguin and Ales Hemsky are questionable for opening night.

Yet earlier today another development came in. Catch up on the news here.

Earlier today, the Dallas Stars assigned F Travis Morin, F Cole Ully, F Remi Elie, and G Philippe Desrosiers to the Texas Stars of the AHL. They also placed F Justin Dowling and F Matej Stransky on waivers. If they clear, they will join Texas in the AHL.

The Stars roster is now down to 31 players, meaning they still need to move eight more players before the regular season begins. With all of the current injuries, the Stars need to choose a few prospects who can fill the injury voids once the regular season gets underway. Tomorrow night’s game against the Kings will hopefully help clear the air on these decisions.

They also signed forward Justin Fontaine to a professional tryout contract and expect him to play tomorrow night in Vegas.

The 28-year-old forward is a three-year NHL veteran, spending all three with the Stars Central Division rival, the Minnesota Wild. So Dallas has seen him plenty of times over the past three years. Fontaine was just released from his professional tryout with the Florida Panthers.

For the ice time he has been given in the past three seasons, Fontaine’s numbers are strong. In 197 regular season games in Minnesota, Fontaine scored 27 goals and tallied 68 total points. He also finished with a plus-22 on-ice rating. This was all done in an average of just 12:02 on the ice.

The right winger could definitely serve as a strong third or fourth line replacement, especially if a natural winger like Patrick Eaves has to fill in at one of the open center spots.

Whatever the case may be, Fontaine will need to prove himself tomorrow night in Sin City. Will he make the roster or will he become a free agent once again? Obviously GM Jim Nill has seen something he likes, especially considering he’s seen his play up close over the past three seasons. We’ll wait until tomorrow to see if he has a chance at cracking the roster.

The Dallas Stars will also receive their first TV time of the preseason tomorrow night. The NHL Network will be broadcasting the game from Vegas tomorrow, so tune in if at all possible. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. from Vegas.
