Cunneyworth returns for 2nd stint to coach Sabres' AHL team
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) Randy Cunneyworth is returning to the Rochester Americans for a second time to coach the Buffalo Sabres' American Hockey League affiliate.
Cunneyworth had a 306-273-61 record and led the Americans to six playoff berths during an eight-season stint from 2000-2008. He's also a former NHL forward, who played 866 games over a 16-year career split between six teams, including Buffalo.
Cunneyworth left Rochester to become an NHL assistant with the then-Atlanta Thrashers. He eventually served as the Montreal Canadiens interim coach for a 50-game stretch to close the 2011-12 season.
He was promoted on Tuesday after spending the past two seasons working as the Sabres development coach. He replaces Chadd Cassidy, who was fired after last season.
