Coyotes' Strome defeats McDavid at bubble hockey
Dylan Strome had to take a back seat to Connor McDavid at the 2015 NHL draft in June, but the Arizona Coyotes center exacted a small measure of revenge on Tuesday when the former teammates tangled in a spirited contest of bubble hockey.
The impromptu clash came to pass during the NHL Players' Association Rookie Showcase, which featured 39 prospects for the two-day event in Toronto.
Strome displayed a bit of emotion while doing his best to outsmart McDavid, who was the top overall selection of the draft by the Edmonton Oilers. The 18-year-old Strome, who was chosen two picks later, raised his arms in triumph after scoring the game-winning goal as a dejected McDavid walked off in disgust.
Strome can savor the flavor of this victory for the time being before the NHL's upcoming season begins in earnest next month.
Strome scored 45 goals and set up an Ontario Hockey League-best 84 others in 68 games with the Erie Otters last season.
Considered the best prospect since Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby in 2005, McDavid collected 44 goals and 76 assists with Erie despite missing time with a broken hand. The 18-year-old McDavid added 21 tallies and set up 28 others during 20 postseason contests.
