Chicago's Sharp has appendix taken out

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp underwent an emergency appendectomy Monday and will need three to four weeks to recover.

Blackhawks team physician Michael Terry said Sharp was experiencing some abnormal abdominal discomfort Monday. He said the surgery was successful.

The Blackhawks open training camp this weekend.

Sharp led the Blackhawks with 34 goals last season and signed a five-year contract extension last month. He had a career-high 71 points and added three goals and two assists in the playoffs when the Blackhawks lost in the first round to Vancouver, a year after winning the Stanley Cup.
