Champions Hockey League reboot shelved

Published Feb. 23, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

Ice hockey's governing body has shelved plans to relaunch a Europe-wide competition after resistance from the top leagues.

The IIHF says ''the majority of the leagues were not in favor'' of competing in a 2011-12 Champions Hockey League.

The federation's deal offered investment of $18.8 million over three seasons including settlement of compensation for clubs who qualified for the canceled 2009-10 season.

Swiss club Bern is awaiting a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling on its claim for $1.3 million.

The league played one season then folded when main sponsor Gazprom withdrew.

The IIHF says it will ''continue dialogue'' to revive the project.
