Carolina Hurricanes Top Three Captains

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Carolina Hurricanes have three Captains that stand out. This may be controversial but I’m going for the last three.

The question on everyone’s mind now is, who will be the next Captain? All signs point to Jordan Staal.

However, Ron Francis said “no urgency in picking a captain. Said may have assistants going into season. No clearcut guy to put ‘C”

Everyone has their opinions on who their top Captains are. I’ve only know one.

I know that Ron Francis and Rod Brind’Amour were Captains. Here is a look at them in no particular order.

3. Ron Francis

Ron Francis was Captain from 2002-2004. He captained the Carolina Hurricanes to a surprise appearance in the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals and scored the winning goal for the Hurricanes in overtime of Game 1.

That was before losing to the Detroit Red Wings in five games.

He is one of the few players in NHL history to be named permanent captain for two distinct terms, with two separate franchises.

He was one of three to take two different teams to the NHL Stanley Cup Finals, along with Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.

The first full season that Eric Staal was Captain, he led his team to the Stanley Cup Finals. Everyone knows that the most famous Captain is Rod Brind’Amour.

I only got to see him play in the Alumni game last season. It was clear that he was one of the best captain’s in Carolina Hurricanes history.

The Carolina Hurricanes will be careful in selecting the next “leader” of the team. Ron Francis was Captain, so he knows the qualities one should have.

I have confidence that Francis will do what is best for the Carolina Hurricanes. Whoever the next captain is, I hope they can lead the Carolina Hurricanes to the Cup.
