Goalie Braden Holtby has been recalled by the Washington Capitals from Hershey of the American Hockey League so he could start against the San Jose Sharks.

The Capitals announced the call-up about 1 1/2 hours before Monday night's game against San Jose, then later listed Holtby in the lineup. It's his first NHL appearance since March 26 last season.

Holtby went 10-2-2 with a 1.79 goals-against average for Washington as a rookie in 2010-11, winning his last five starts.

Washington's No. 1 goalie, Tomas Vokoun, missed a second consecutive game because of illness. Michal Neuvirth started in goal for Washington on Sunday in a 3-2 loss at the New York Rangers.
