Capitals starting goalie Jose Theodore has been pulled and replaced by Semyon Varlamov after allowing goals on the first two shots he faced in Game 2 against the Montreal Canadiens.
Montreal's Brian Gionta scored a minute into Saturday night's first-round playoff game, and Andrei Kostitsyn made it 2-0 at 7:58. That was it for Theodore, who slammed his stick as he came off the ice.
The Canadiens won Game 1 in overtime 3-2 Thursday night.
Washington coach Bruce Boudreau had said Theodore would not be on a short leash in these playoffs. Last season, Theodore started Game 1 against the New York Rangers in the first round and lost, and Boudreau switched to Varlamov for Game 2.
