Capitals assign benched center Nylander to AHL

Published Oct. 21, 2009 10:38 p.m. ET

The Washington Capitals have assigned center Michael Nylander to Grand Rapids of the AHL for a conditioning stint, giving the expensive bench-sitting veteran a chance to get back on the ice. Nylander hasn't played all season, having fallen out of favor with the coaching staff and front office. The Capitals have found it difficult to trade the 37-year-old forward because of his $5.5 million salary and the no-movement clause in his contract. Nylander will continue to count against the Capitals' 23-man roster, but the move to Grand Rapids gives him the opportunity to play without taking playing time from Washington's own prospects.
