Canucks rally late to top Blackhawks

Published Feb. 5, 2011 12:00 a.m. ET

Daniel Sedin scored with 4 minutes left to take over the NHL scoring lead and lift the Vancouver Canucks to their fifth straight win with a wild 4-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.

Daniel left the puck for twin brother Henrik, who tied the game on a power play six minutes earlier, and then redirected the return feed toward the net. It hit a Chicago defenseman in the slot and fluttered over goalie Marty Turco.

Daniel, who also had an assist on Henrik's tying goal, moved one point ahead of Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos for the league lead with 69 points.

Dave Bolland, who had a goal waved off mysteriously in the first period, put Chicago ahead 7:47 into the third when rookie defenseman Chris Tanev batted a shot that was going wide into his own net. But Henrik tied it on a power play just over two minutes later with a one-timer from just above the goal line after Mikael Samuelsson's fake point shot stranded Turco atop his crease.

Samuelsson had tied it late in the second period, Christian Ehrhoff also scored, Henrik added two assists, and Roberto Luongo finished with 42 saves as the Canucks ended a five-game home losing streak against Chicago.

The skid included all three games in last year's second-round playoff loss to Chicago and a 7-1 loss on Nov. 20. But Vancouver is 24-4-6 since then and leads the NHL with 77 points, while the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks remained ninth in the Western Conference, a point out of the playoffs.

Captain Jonathan Toews scored and set up defenseman Nick Boynton's first goal in 69 games for the Blackhawks, who have lost three of the last four.

Turco made 28 saves in his second straight start since last weekend's All-Star break after only playing twice ahead of rookie Corey Crawford in January.

The game featured several close calls, near misses, and great saves at both ends.

Bolland appeared to open the scoring with five minutes left in the first period, but his goal from the top of the right faceoff circle and past Luongo's blocker was waved off immediately. The referee explained it was called off was because Troy Brouwer ''was in the crease,'' but replays showed the Chicago forward never touched Luongo beyond brushing his stick as he cut in front.

Luongo robbed Tomas Kopecky alone in the slot with his glove two minutes later, and Ehrhoff opened the scoring with a screened point shot a minute after that.

Toews tied it five minutes into the second period, and set up the go-ahead goal less than 5 minutes later. First he stole the puck from Manny Malhotra to create a 2-on-1 with Brouwer before snapping it under Luongo.

Then Toews simply threw the puck at the net and watched as it bounced in off the leg of Boynton as he was tied up with defenseman Dan Hamhuis going to the net.

Toews tied the game 5 minutes into the second period, and set up Boynton's go-ahead goal 5 minutes later. But the Blackhawks' No. 1 ranked power play failed on three straight chances, including a 5-on-3 for 47 seconds, and Samuelsson tied it on a Canucks power play with 1:16 left in the period.
