Canucks make multiple front office changes

Published Aug. 5, 2015 11:31 a.m. ET

The Vancouver front office saw quite a few changes on Tuesday, as the team named six people to new posts. Most notably, the Canucks named John Weisbrod as the new assistant general manager one year after he was hired as a vice president of player personnel.

Weisbrod's playing career was cut short due to injury, and he originally started working in the business side of sports with the Orlando Magic. Weisbrod served as a general manager for the Magic in 2004 but didn't last long, as he stepped down from his position in 2005. Despite his short tenure, Weisbrod managed to earn the ire of Tracy McGrady, who was traded from the Magic to the Rockets after multiple clashes with Weisbrod.

"Honestly, as long as John Weisbrod was the GM there was no way, no way I'd step another foot in a Magic uniform," McGrady said in a televised interview with ESPN at the time. "It was just his whole demeanor and the whole way he goes about doing business and doing things."

Weisbrod re-entered the hockey sphere as a scout for the Stars in 2005, then he joined the Bruins as a scout from 2006-2011. Weisbrod was named the Assistant General Manager of the Calgary Flames in 2011 but was fired by the team just over two years later.

In other notable moves Tuesday, the Canucks appointed Chris Gear as the Vice President and General Counsel for Canucks Sports & Entertainment, and they named Judd Bracket as the Director of Amateur Scouting.
