Buffalo Sabres' Robin Lehner exits game with lower body injury

If there is a list of things you don't want to see happen to your hockey team, watching your franchise goaltender that you traded for in the offseason head off the ice with an injury has to be towards the top of the list.

Midway through the second period, Robin Lehner dropped down to block a shot and looked to be in a great deal of discomfort. Lehner would eventually hobble off the ice and down the tunnel. The team would later announce that Lehner was out for the remainder of the game.

Lehner looked a bit shaky in the beginning of the game, surrendering a goal within 30 second to the Ottawa Senators' Kyle Turris. Following the early goal, Lehner settled in and stopped the next 11 shots he faced.

Chad Johnson, who came in to relieve Lehner, finished the game with eight saves on nine shots. The Sabres offense failed to bail him out as they were only able to generate one goal in the 3-1 loss.

The Sabres traded the 21st overall pick in the 2015 draft in exchange for Lehner and David Legwand.

The extent of the injury wasn't immediately known, but the initial prognosis isn't particularly encouraging.

Having the 24-year-old goaltender out for an extended period of time could spell trouble for the Sabres, who surrendered 274 goals last season, the second-worst in the entire NHL.
