The Boston Bruins signed veteran defenseman Shane Hnidy on Saturday to a one-year contract.

Hnidy, who hasn't played since injuring a shoulder during a training camp tryout with Phoenix, joined the Bruins on the ice in Vancouver on Wednesday. He has yet to be clear to play by doctors and wasn't scheduled to be in the Boston lineup against the host Canucks on Saturday night.

The 35-year-old Hnidy has 16 goals, 71 points and 631 penalty minutes in 547 NHL games with six teams over nine seasons. He played 108 regular-season games with Boston from 2007-09 and 14 playoff games.

The Bruins also signed of minor league forward Kirk MacDonald, who was playing on an AHL contract this season. He will remain with the Bruins' AHL Providence affiliate.
