Bruins GM Sweeney appreciative of Seidenberg's approach to injury

The Bruins' defense corps suffered a major blow when the team announced veteran defenseman Dennis Seidenberg will miss at least eight weeks of action after undergoing back surgery Thursday. Seidenberg, now 34 years old, has a lumbar spine disc herniation which the team suspects he suffered during training camp.

"He was just training and came in and said he had some symptoms," Bruins GM Don Sweeney said to the Boston Herald. "Stuff happens. He apologized. It’s not something he would want to have happen to him. He’s a proud guy and team member. He takes that to heart. So he was apologetic and he said he’ll do everything he can do to get back. You appreciate that: A guy who cares."

The Bruins are already thin on top-pairing defensemen. After trading Dougie Hamilton before the Draft, the Bruins are left with Zdeno Chara, Torey Krug and Adam McQuaid as top-pairing capable defensemen. The team has an abundance of players fighting for third-pairing roles, but the defense projects to be largely unimproved from last season's underwhelming squad.

Seidenberg missed significant time in 2013-14 after an ACL/MCL injury limited him to just 34 games. While Seidenberg played all 82 games for the Bruins last season, he never seemed to regain his pre-knee injury form.
