Calgary Flames forward Rene Bourque has been suspended five games by the NHL for elbowing Washington's Nicklas Backstrom in the head.
Bourque was given a minor penalty for elbowing Tuesday night for his hit on Backstrom at 10:06 of the third period of Calgary's 3-1 loss at Washington. Backstrom played two more shifts before leaving the game.
The suspension was handed down Wednesday night. It is the second time this season Bourque has been suspended, and he was treated this time as a repeat offender. He was given a two-game ban last month for a hit on Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook.
Bourque, who will be eligible to return on Jan. 17 at San Jose, will lose $203,252.05 in salary.
