Banged-up Red Wings lose Cleary to shoulder injury

Published Dec. 16, 2009 8:54 p.m. ET

Red Wings coach Mike Babcock says Dan Cleary will be out for about a month because of a separated shoulder.

Cleary was injured Wednesday night in Detroit's loss to the St. Louis Blues.

The forward has 16 points this season, trailing Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk on the team. Cleary had 40-plus points the previous three seasons for the Red Wings.

Detroit's rebuilding season has been more difficult than expected.

The franchise could not keep some of its key players such as Marian Hossa because of the salary cap. Then, the Red Wings lost Johan Franzen, Valtteri Filppula, Jason Williams and defenseman Niklas Kronwall to injuries.
