Avalanche D Liles leaves with leg injury

Published Mar. 9, 2011 4:18 a.m. ET

Colorado Avalanche defenseman John-Michael Liles has left the team's game against the Minnesota Wild with a leg injury.

Liles was hurt in the first period of Tuesday's game against the Wild, and the Avalanche announced in the second period that Liles would not return. Coach Joe Sacco said afterward that Liles injured his quadriceps and that he'd be re-evaluated on Wednesday.

Liles leads the Avalanche in ice time and blocked shots and has not missed a game yet this season. He also leads the Avs this season with a career-high 36 assists and entering Tuesday's play ranked tied for seventh in the NHL in defense scoring with 42 points.

Liles is the highest-scoring defenseman in franchise history.
