AP Source: Coyotes place Antoine Vermette on buyout waivers

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 12:49 a.m. ET

A person with direct knowledge of the move says the Arizona Coyotes have placed center Antoine Vermette on unconditional waivers to buy out his contract.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team wasn't planning to announce the move. Vermette was placed on waivers at noon EDT on Monday.

Assuming he clears waivers, Vermette will become a free agent and will count $1.25 million against Arizona's cap each of the next two seasons. The 34-year-old was set to count $3.75 million in the final year of his deal.

Vermette had 17 goals and 21 assists in 76 games last season. In 910 NHL games with Ottawa, Columbus, Chicago and Arizona, Vermette has 211 goals and 260 assists.
