What exactly did Jordan Reed think would happen when he punched an opponent in the helmet?

Washington tight end Jordan Reed was ejected from the team's game against Carolina on Monday night when he punched the Panthers' Kurt Coleman in the helmet.

It's unclear what, precisely, he thought he would accomplish by punching Coleman in the helmet.

Did he think it would scare Coleman? Did he think he could ... hurt Coleman? Does Reed have that much belief in his punches?

It's a curious move. The typical reason you punch someone in the head is to hurt them, and when that person you want to hurt is wearing a large, hard piece of equipment on the head, it sort of negates the whole reason for punching someone. In fact, it often is more likely to hurt you, seeing that your hand is not wearing a helmet and your opponent's head is.

In any event, whatever damage Reed did to his hand was compounded by the fact that he was tossed from the game. Don't punch people is the lesson we can learn from this, and if you do need to punch someone, make sure he is not wearing a helmet when you do so.
