Washington Redskins Injury Update: Three Defenders Return To Practice

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Washington Redskins were without two of their top corners and a backup linebacker on Sunday. The trio returned to practice on Wednesday.

The Washington Redskins look to be on the verge of getting some of their key defensive players back. After being without three key role players against the Ravens, the three missing players returned to practice on Wednesday. Bashaud Breeland, Dashaun Phillips, and Su’a Cravens were all seen working out in individual periods, according to CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Rich Tandler.

It remains to be seen whether or not the players will be ready for Sunday’s game against the Eagles. However, it seems likely that at a couple of them may.

Breeland and Phillips have both played big roles in the Washington secondary to start the year. Breeland had been the No. 2 cornerback before he hurt his ankle. He was not off to the best start of his career as some superior receivers beat him in early matchups, but he definitely has the talent to play the position.

Meanwhile, Phillips has not been all that impressive, and his absence may have lost him his job. Quinton Dunbar and rookie Kendall Fuller did a great job of filling in for the two cornerbacks while they were out. Dunbar has been particularly good, and has definitely earned more playing time. That could come at the expense of the nickel back, Phillips. Phillips simply has been subpar, and it looks like he should be the depth corner for the Redskins team. The other players deserve more time on the field.

For Cravens, it remains to be seen what his status is. The rookie linebacker suffered a concussion in Week 4 against the Browns and had to sit out Week 5 as a result. Reports had recently said that Cravens had suffered permanent vision damage, but that was not the case. That said, having him back on the field is a great sign for the team. I had expected that he might be out long term, but it appears as though he may return in the near future.
