Torrey Smith on his two years with the 49ers: 'It wasn't fun'
Two years ago, Torrey Smith signed a five-year, $40 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers. He was coming off of a season in which he caught 49 passes for 767 yards and 11 touchdowns – decent numbers, but some questioned whether he was deserving of $40 million.
As it turns out, that stat line was better than the two he posted with the 49ers. He caught just 53 passes for 930 yards and seven touchdowns in two years with the Niners, leading to his release this week. He apologized to fans for being a disappointment, but on Tuesday, he expanded on his time in San Francisco a bit.
"Last few years were terrible professionally, you know?" Smith said, via CSN Mid-Atlantic. "Football, it wasn't fun," he said. "Wasn't very involved, so it wasn't a fun two years as a player, but had some great relationships with a lot of people out there.”
Granted, he did miss four games last season, but it just goes to show how infrequently he was used on offense. Understandably, that frustrated him, as it would any receiver.
It wasn’t all bad, though. He built great relationships in the locker room during his time in San Francisco.
"Loved the locker room, loved my teammates and I loved both coaching staffs I was involved with as well so it just was I came in at the wrong time but I'm still thankful for the opportunity that they gave me,” he said.
