Titans replace LT Lewan as captain with RB McCluster
Tennessee Titans interim head coach Mike Mularkey said one of the first moves he made after taking over the team last Tuesday was to replace left tackle Taylor Lewan with running back Dexter McCluster as a team captain.
McCluster joined tight end Delanie Walker, linebackers Brian Orakpo and Wesley Woodyard, defensive lineman Jurrell Casey and cornerback Jason McCourty as captains.
Mularkey said the decision was based on experience. McCluster is in his sixth season, while Lewan is in his second year. The coach said Lewan took the news well.
“I’m sure it bruised (Lewan's) ego,” Mularkey said, per the Tennessean. “It would anyone that is a competitor, but (his disappointment) did not show up on the field. I told him, 'You’ll be a captain here for a long, long time.’ It was just a decision that was best from my eyes for our team.”
McCluster, who suffered an ankle injury in last week's win over New Orleans, didn't practice Wednesday. The 27-year old has 210 yards rushing and 177 yards receiving this season, while also returning kicks and punts on special teams.
