Tim Brown on RGIII: He has to loosen up a little bit
One of the NFL's greatest wide receivers of all time, Tim Brown, had a few words of advice for a quarterback that he has gotten to know well along the way. And if you're Robert Griffin, when Brown speaks, you should definitely listen.
“I know RGIII well enough to know that he’s a little different,” Brown told ESPN 980 before the Super Bowl. “I mean, I know he is maybe not the brother that you’re gonna be hanging out in the locker room with. And from that standpoint, that’s something that he has to work on. If he’s going to be a leader, he has to be a leader of everybody in the locker room, and not just one or two guys in the locker room.”
Brown also added that Griffin “had to loosen up a little bit and be a part of the team".
Brown's criticism may seem harsh, but he is confident that Griffin can turn things around.
“This guy has all the talent in the world,” Brown continued. “I understand that he’s trying to do things a little differently, and I applaud him for trying to do things differently. He’s married already, he’s living a totally different lifestyle than maybe 99 percent of the guys in the locker room. However, [former Raiders coach] Art Shell used to say all the time, when you come in the black gates … and no one else can get in but you, then you have to be part of that organization. I think that’s the one thing that he has to do a better job of, letting the other guys in the locker room know, ‘Hey, this is my lifestyle away from here, but in here, I’m one of you guys.’ It doesn’t mean he has to act crazy. It just means he has to let them know that he’s a part of the locker room.”
Griffin will most likely get the first crack at leading this Redskins offense when OTAs start up, barring an unforeseen draft day trade for Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota.
