Tennessee Titans: Position Battles Continue
With less than one week from the regular season opener, teams have trimmed their rosters down to 53. Even so, the competition is not over. The waiver wire claims have slowed down, but they’re not over just yet. I’ve put together a short list of the Titans’ position battles that will carry on during the regular season.
Left Guard
Quinton Spain vs. Brian Schwenke vs. Sebastian Tretola
Quinton Spain has been named the starter and is set to be on the field with the ones in the season opener, barring some freak injury in practice this week. That being said, I wouldn’t say he’s entrenched to hold the position like Marcus Mariota or Delanie Walker. Brian Schwenke also had reps with the first team during the preseason and Sebastian Tretola started catching on towards the end of the preseason.
NO.1 Receiver
Rishard Matthews vs. Tajae Sharpe vs. Kendall Wright
In three wide sets you should see all three of these guys on the feild, Matthews and Sharpe on the outside and Wright in the slot. Right now Rishard Mattews is listed as the team’s number one, but Sharpe saw more action in the preseason. We never had the opportunity to see Wright on the feild this preseason as he’s been battling injury, but he does have the most experience out of the three being the team’s first round pick in 2012.

No. 2 Tight End
Anthony Fasano vs. Phiilip Supernaw vs. Jace Amaro
Once a position firmly held by Craig Stevens, he shocked everyone with his retirement decision earlier in the offseason. Now, it comes down to this three-way competition. Anthony Fasano is a true veteran who excels in run blocking. Phillip Supernaw is physically gifted standing 6’5 and 250lbs, and he’s had a few nice catches in his time here. Jace Amaro is a former second round pick who was waived by the Jets. He has loads of talent, but has been injury plagued in his short career.
Free Safety
Da’Norris Searcy vs. Daimion Stafford
Much like Quinton Spain, Da’Norris Searcy is slated to be the starter, but Daimion Stafford is quickly approaching. After a great camp he began to steal first team reps from Searcy, and watching him in preseason games he seemed to embody that team-first mentality Jon Robinson has been talking about.

These are the guys still fighting to keep their starting spot. Of course, this won’t happen over night or even week to week, but if one of the guys mentioned above puts together two or three bad games we’re likely to see a personnel change. Remember last year, in Mike Mularkey’s first game as interim head coach against the Saints Jeremiah Poutasi played so badly that Mularkey benched him in the middle of the game.
