Source: Report that Giants pulled long-term offer to JPP was '100 percent false'

Since the July 4th incident that sent New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to the hospital, reports have varied. On Monday, the NFL Network reported that the Giants had rescinded a long-term contract offer of $60 million that they left on the table before Pierre-Paul injured his hand. However, an NFL source tells the New York Post that this report was '100 percent false'.

The same source did confirm that there is a long-term offer on the table, and that the Giants have not yet pulled this offer. In the end, the likely scenario remains that Pierre-Paul will play out 2015 with the Giants under the $14.8 million 'franchise tag' tender offer.

“This just happened, and no one really knows what the ultimate prognosis it,’’ the source told The Post, per Mark Cannizzaro. “He’s got the franchise tag, and that’s what he will get this year if he is physically able.”

Some reports have claimed that this rumored $60 million offer was a moot point, because Pierre-Paul was never planning on accepting anything close to that. Although this offer would fit right into the range of deals that recent top defensive linemen like Robert Quinn and Cameron Jordan have just signed, Pierre-Paul had his mind set on another option. If he played the entire 16-game regular season like he did over the final five games of 2014, he would be looking at a much bigger offer.

It's still too early to tell when Pierre-Paul will make it back on the field. Some reports have expressed concerns that he might miss some regular season time. In that scenario, there are many options that the Giants can turn to at Pierre-Paul's right defensive end spot. Cullen Jenkins practiced on the outside, at right defensive end, during the team's spring practices. They could mix and match him, based on the down and distance, with talented pass rusher Damontre Moore. Kerry Wynn made some noise at the end of 2014, and the Giants could opt to turn to him as well.

Both of the Giants' starting defensive end spots now project to be a hot topic during training camp. With Pierre-Paul potentially out, at least for the beginning of camp, you should expect this to be the team's most heated camp position battle.
