Report: Texans' Vrabel turns down 49ers defensive coordinator job

Houston Texans linebackers coach Mike Vrabel has passed on an offer to become defensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers, according to a report.
Via John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, Vrabel interviewed with San Francisco head coach Chip Kelly on Tuesday before deciding against taking the job. McClain reports Houston head coach Bill O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith lobbied to get Vrabel stay and the assistant coach is expected to receive a new contract from the Texans.
Vrabel has spent the past two seasons on O'Brien's staff after three seasons coaching at Ohio State.
The 40-year-old played 14 seasons in the NFL, winning three Super Bowls as a member of the New England Patriots.
Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus recorded a career-high 12 sacks in 2015 under Vrabel's guidance.
