Redskins' rookie Brandon Scherff continues to make progress
There are high expectations for Washington Redskins rookie offensive lineman Brandon Scherff heading into 2015. After being named the No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Redskins hope he can come in and start from day one. Scherff showed progress through the Redskins' OTA practices, and according to head coach Jay Gruden, he has carried that over through the first day of mini-camp.
“He learns,” Gruden said of Scherff after Monday's practice, per Redskins Blog. “If he has a mistake, he’s going to try to fix it and that’s important for an offensive lineman to study the game and learn from your mistakes.”
Gruden believes that Scherff has pretty much every factor needed to create a prototypical NFL offensive tackle.
"The good thing about Brandon is he’s strong, he has great feet and he really cares about the success of a football play,” Gruden said. “With all that in mind, size, strength, takes coaching well, has a great coach working with him. I think he’s going to be fine.”
Scherff is taking first team reps at right tackle. When starting left tackle Trent Williams revealed that he won't be participating in the mini-camp, some speculated that the Redskins would try Scherff at left tackle. They have opted to keep him on the right side in an effort to get him as many repetitions as possible at one position before Week 1 of the regular season arrives.
