Rams on Favre: ‘It was just a joke’
After a Thursday that consisted of non-stop Brett Favre headlines, the St. Louis Rams are saying, “Nothing to see here, folks.”
Favre insisted Thursday that he has no desire at the moment to return to the NFL, but the Rams are now saying that their “interest” in the 44-year-old was no more than a knee-slapper.
“It was just a joke,” a team source told NFL.com. “It was just a throwaway line. Doesn’t anyone have a sense of humor?”
Favre employs the same agent, Bus Cook, as quarterback Austin Davis, whom the Rams signed Tuesday.
A Rams official joked, “Hey, what about Favre?” while discussing Davis with Cook, according to NFL.com.
“It’s not like the Rams sent Tavon Austin and Robert Quinn down to Hattiesburg to try to lure Brett Favre off his tractor,” Ian Rapoport said Thursday on NFL Network’s Around the League Live. “As he told us on Sunday, he realized that after about 20 years in the NFL he doesn’t like getting hit.”
The Rams also acquired Brady Quinn this week to join Davis and Kellen Clemens on the roster. The team lost starting quarterback Sam Bradford to a season-ending torn ACL last Sunday.
